| DEREK JAMES (JIM) WALDING May 9, 1937- April 23, 2007 Peacefully after a short battle with cancer Jim passed away at the age of 69. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Valerie; sons, Andrew and Phillip (Lori); daughter Christine; and granddaughters, Kimberly and Rachel. Jim is also survived by his sisters, Jill of Henderson, Nevada and Joy of Rushden, England. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Dorothy. Born and raised in Rushden, England, Jim, after serving his military duty in Ireland, attended the London School of Optometry graduating with top honours. Jim and Val then immigrated to Canada in 1961 settling in Winnipeg to work for Lorne Walsh Opticians. After 10 years as an optician Jim entered public life as the MLA for St. Vital in 1971 serving until his retirement in 1988. He also served four years as the Speaker of the House for Manitoba. Jim enjoyed reading; playing cards, especially bridge; boxing and formula one racing. Memorial service will be held on Monday April 30, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Society of Manitobans with Disabilities, 825 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg.
