SISTER BARBRA MCSWEENEY (published on April 22, 2006)

SISTER BARBRA MCSWEENEY, RSCJ Born in 1934 in Halifax, Sister McSweeney died in Barat Residence, 1455 Summer St., Halifax, on April 14, 2006. She was a daughter of Gertrude Bruce and the late George McSweeney. Her father George and infant brother David, predeceased her. She will be greatly missed by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, her mother, brother, Dan (Sandra), Manitoba; sister Alexis (Jim Meagher), Halifax; four nephews, one niece, great-nephews and a great-niece. She attended school in Halifax and entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1954, making her final vows in 1962 in Montreal. Her teaching career spanned a period of almost 40 years beginning in 1957. In 1968 and 1981, she undertook further studies in the field of education. She taught at Sacred Heart schools in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montreal and Halifax. During her religious life as an educator, she was deeply loved by many students who remember her fondly as a gifted and inspiring teacher. A vigil was held on Tuesday, April 18 in Barat Residence. The Liturgy of the Resurrection was presided by Rev. Albert Cosgrove on Wednesday, April 19, also at Barat Residence. Cremation took place with burial on Thursday, April 20 in Holy Cross Cemetery.
