CHARLES (CHUCK) CARR (published on April 22, 2006)

CHARLES (CHUCK) CARR December 6, 1917 - April 15, 2006 After a brief illness, Charles Carr passed away peacefully, with his family at his side. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Irene. Charles passed away just one day before the sixth anniversary of her death. He will be greatly missed by his family: son David (Merit) Carr, daughter Susan (Bill) Stevenson; and grandchildren, Matthew, Jeffrey, Madeline, Scott, Emma, and Sarah. He will also be greatly missed by his special friend, Lois Cohlmeyer. He is survived by his sister, Jean Stephens. Dad was born and grew up in Stratford, ON, the fourth of five children. As a young man, he was a talented and aggressive athlete, and played hockey for several area teams. In Stratford, he also began his over four decades of employment with Swift's, a career that was only interrupted by his service with the RCAF during the Second World War. Dad met Mom after his return to Stratford, where she had recently graduated as a R.N., and they were married in 1947. In the early years of their marriage, while Dad was an auditor for Swift's, they travelled throughout North America, visiting many exotic places and making many friends. They later lived in Delaware, North Carolina, Georgia, Oregon, and in Chicago, where Dad worked at Swift's head office. In 1966, our family moved to Winnipeg when Dad became manager of Swift's poultry plant, where he remained until his retirement in 1981. After retirement, he and Mom spent many happy years travelling and enjoying life with their children and grandchildren. Dad was an especially wonderful grandfather, generous and loving to a fault and always eager to spoil his grandchildren. The happiness of Mom and Dad's retirement was cut short when Mom was afflicted by Alzheimer's. For over five years, he was her devoted and loving caregiver, sacrificing all of his energy to her care. Several years after Mom's passing, Dad was lucky enough to find happiness again in the company of his special friend, Lois. Our family wishes to thank the staff at Grace Hospital, especially Shelley Letkeman, who cared for Dad with compassion in his final days. We also want to thank Dad's friend Barb, who was a great help to him over the last few years. At Dad's request, cremation and a private family memorial have taken place. Flowers are declined with gratitude. At Dad's request, friends who wish may make a donation in his memory to the Alzheimer Society of Winnipeg, Unit 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2.
