THOMAS LEONARD WITTIG (published on April 22, 2006)

THOMAS LEONARD WITTIG, DVM October 30, 1923 - April 19, 2006 Tom passed away peacefully at St. Boniface hospital. He was born in Kitchener, ON to Joseph and Victoria (King) Wittig. Tom served in the RCAF from 1943 to 1945, as a navigator with the 434 Bluenose Squadron. While stationed in Winnipeg, he met Jean McLeod. They were married in Kitchener on December 29, 1948. After residing a short time in Guelph, where he attended Ontario Veterinary College, he moved to Winnipeg and worked for Agriculture Canada until his retirement in 1983. In his senior years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and curling. Tom was a member of Norwood Legion Branch 43, and a life member of the Wartime Pilots Observers Association. Tom was predeceased by his parents, his four brothers and three sisters. He was also predeceased by his oldest son Gary in 1976. Surviving are his loving wife Jean; children, Anne (Ron) Toews, Catherine, Tom (Carol Jackson), Joe (Filomena Alquino), Jim (Lori), Margaret (Danny) Pugh, Rob (Darcey), Rick; and grandchildren, Jen (Gordon) Veri, Karen Toews (Michael Therrien), Christopher, Laura and Kevin Wittig, Karra Wittig, Mark Pugh; and great-granddaughter Mya Veri. Thank you to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital. Funeral mass will take place on Tuesday, April 25 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Chapel, 66 Birchdale (St. Boniface) with viewing one half hour prior. Fr. Lucien Roy presiding. In accordance with Tom's wishes, cremation will follow, with a private family interment in Green Acres Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
