J. I. GILBERT DIAS (published on February 24, 2007)

J. I. GILBERT DIAS April 4, 1931 - February 20, 2007 It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Gilbert, beloved husband, loving father and grandfather, on Tuesday, February 20, 2007. Gilbert will be forever cherished by Julieta, his loving wife of 52 years; his younger brother William, and his children and grandchildren, Violette (Angelo), Alyssa and Anthony, Leonita (Nolasco), Elton and Valerie, Louis (Mayola), Jude and Peter, and Clo. He was predeceased by his parents, Peter Luis and Belmira. Dad was born in Nairobi, Kenya on April 4, 1931. His family moved to Goa in the early 1940s where he attended St. Vincent's High School in Poona, India and afterwards returned to Africa (Uganda) in 1950. He worked for the Uganda Government in the Forestry and Audit Departments. In his capacity as Senior Auditor he travelled cross country, often taking his family with him on his safaris . He immigrated to Canada in 1973 on a wing and a prayer, and has resided in Winnipeg since. He often said, this is the longest I've lived in one place . In Winnipeg he worked for the Provincial Audit as an Auditor until 1991, when he retired. He loved to travel, and has taken many trips, both by car and air, to many exciting destinations. Recently he fulfilled his dream to visit the Holy Land and Portugal. Dad was young at heart and loved to tease. He also enjoyed playing tricks on his closest friends. He liked to sing, dance and enjoyed creating things out of wood. In his younger days he played soccer and badminton. Dad was truly a family man. In 1983 he arranged to bring his mother, Belmira to Canada to live with him and took care of her until her death in 1998. He was a devoted husband, lovingly caring for Mum when she was ill. He loved and nurtured all his children, always taking the time to listen, ready with advice and guidance for them and his many nieces and nephews. He was warm hearted and generous and always welcomed his family and friends with open arms. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. His pockets filled with candy to share or bribe them with. We will miss you Dad. Gilbert's trust and faith in God was deep, and he always believed that his successes in life were gifts from God. Dad joined the Knights of Columbus, Local 1107 and served as Treasurer for a number of years. He also volunteered at the C.N.I.B. in their woodworking class. Viewing will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave. (Aubrey Street entrance), and at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 26, 2007 at St. Vital Roman Catholic Church, 1629 Pembina Hwy., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Dr. Patrick A. Morand presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the League for Life, or a charity of your choice. You were always there When we needed you No task too great or small With a loving heart And a willing hand For us you did it all Thank you for the years you've given us And for the time we shared We only pray that when you left us You knew how much we cared NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca
