MARION HELEN COLMAN (published on November 07, 2007)

MARION HELEN COLMAN (BARRIE) Helen Colman died peacefully on November 4, 2007 at Allendale in Milton, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband, Mac, and her son, Bob. Helen is survived by her daughter, Patty Wilcox (John) and family, Kathleen White (Ken) Andrew; Timothy (Suzy) Maggie and Claire; Elizabeth Taylor (Ryan); and nephews, Donald and Ken Barrie, and Ian and Bruce Fox, and their families. Helen was born on December 6, 1909, in Davidson, Saskatchewan of parents who had moved west from southern Ontario. With a B.A. degree from the University of Toronto and an education degree from the University of Saskatchewan, she spent her first year teaching as Principal of a one room school in Coleville, Saskatchewan. She then taught for seven years at the Llanarthney School for Girls in Edmonton, Alberta. She maintained lasting friendships with many of her former senior students. Helen married Mac Colman, a mining engineer, and settled in Kirkland Lake in 1938. During the Second World War, Helen found herself raising two children on various air force bases in western Canada; finally in Winnipeg. Helen was very active in community service there, serving as President of the Home and School Association, the River Heights Community Centre; and on the boards of the Winnipeg Girl Guides, the Winnipeg YWCA and St. Andrews United Church. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Allendale (Petit House), who cared for Helen for the past 18 months. There will be no service in Milton but a private service will be held in Winnipeg at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Willow Foundation of Halton Region 203 Georgian Drive, Oakville, Ontario L6H 7H9 or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the McKersie-Kocher Funeral Home 114 Main St. Milton 905-878-4452. Letters of condolence may be left for the family at www.mckersie-kocher.ca
