PETER FRANK HESCOTT (published on November 29, 2007)

PETER FRANK HESCOTT On Sunday, November 25, 2007, Peter passed away in Concordia Hospital. Peter was predeceased by his wife Helen (1997); son Neal (1989) and daughter Heather (2004). He is survived by son-in-law Tony Carpenter and grandsons Keith and Bryan; numerous nieces and nephews. Peter was born in Winnipeg May 15, 1919, and spent his childhood years in the Point Douglas area. He was very proud of his north end heritage, his personal survival skills acquired during the great depression in the bush camps of north western Ontario, his war service in the North Atlantic with the Canadian Navy and his employment with the Water Survey of Canada from which he retired in 1984. Peter was an innovator and environmentalist all his life. He lovingly nurtured his Kildonan Drive river bank property into his own personal Shangri-La. Composting, organic produce, recycling and respect of nature were always part of his lifestyle. Eating a homegrown tomato and salvaging a discarded item gave him almost as much pleasure as beating the taxman. Finding a new home for these items that were up for grabs was an ongoing challenge and if you didn't want it he would say that's the way it goes. It's just unfortunate that towards the end as Peter would say, things got a little screwed up. Most people would call Peter a character for he was definitely one of a kind but his neighbours, friends and relatives will remember his passion for life, love of nature and animals and most of all his willingness to share his time, knowledge and resources so their lives would be a little easier. He is now with his family. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Ash interment will be on Tuesday, December 4 at 10:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter's memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
