IRENE MARY AUSTEN (published on November 29, 2007)

IRENE MARY AUSTEN (nee BEANEY) Irene passed away peacefully on November 26, 2007, at Sunnywood Manor Personal Care Home in Pine Falls, MB, at the age of 92. Irene was born June 18, 1915, in North Halling, Kent, England. She was the youngest of nine children. Even though she was born two months after her father had died in combat in France, Irene was part of a loving, happy family. She enjoyed school and a variety of local jobs and married in 1938. During the Second World War, while her husband James was serving overseas, Irene remained at home. Like the rest of her generation these experiences became a central part of her life. During the 1950s, Irene and James and by now three sons, moved to Canada, the Thunder Bay area, where two of Irene's brothers had previously moved to. In 1960 the family moved back to the UK; however, by 1969 they had moved to Canada permanently. In 1972, Irene and James purchased a home at Victoria Beach, which they retired to a few years later. Irene moved to Sunnywood Manor in November of 2006, were she spent an enjoyable year. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all the staff of Sunnywood Manor. The excellent care given, the compassion and loving concern always shown, and the smile always shared have been greatly appreciated and will be fondly remembered. We also thank Dr. Abu-Shama and the staff of the Pine Falls Medical Centre. Irene loved her little house in the trees of Victoria Beach, and the community which she became a part of. A lifelong Anglican, she was a member of St. Michael's Church, and was also an original member of the Senior's Scene club of Victoria Beach. Irene loved to dance, and enjoyed singing, even if just around the house. She was passionate about tennis, and her family knew that you just wouldn't get her away from the television during Wimbledon. Irene loved her family, friends, home and community. She was generous and kind and was usually the life of the party, her wit and sense of humour will long be remembered. She was a well loved mother and friend and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her sister Louisa Roads of Kent, England; son Gerald and wife Eileen of Victoria Beach; daughter Jane of Victoria Beach; daughters-in-law, Beverly and Lynne; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Irene was predeceased by her husband James; and sons, Graham and Robert. A service of thanksgiving to celebrate Irene's life will be held at St. Michael's Church, Victoria Beach, on Friday, November 30 at 2:00 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Judy Whitmore. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Arthritis Society, 105 - 386 Broadway, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 3R6, or the Anglican Parish of St. Michael, Victoria Beach Memorial Fund. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
