ALICE MARY THOMAS (published on November 29, 2007)

ALICE MARY THOMAS (nee WHYTE) April 9, 1936 - November 26, 2007 After a lengthy illness during which she prevailed valiantly until the end, Alice passed away peacefully on November 26 at Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, Ontario. May God rest her soul in peace. Alice is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Jack; children, Bruce Colin of Edmonton, Darcy Anne of Winnipeg, Wanda Diane of Eckville, Alberta, Alana Jane Kenyon of Burnaby, Mallory Lynn (David) Muller of Chestermere, Alberta; grandchildren, Sarah Jane Stewart of North Vancouver, Owen Muller and recently arrived Brody Muller of Chestermere. She will be fondly remembered by sisters, Joan Bull of Kelvington, Saskatchewan, Anita Bohn and husband Edwin of Pinawa, Manitoba, Mary Jane Ely and husband Mark of Winnipeg; along with her many nephews, nieces and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Fraser and Eleanor Whyte of Kelvington, Saskatchewan; and brother Fraser of Regina. Alice received her elementary education at Brand School near Kelvington and completed her high school education at that community. She graduated as a Psychiatric Nurse at Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, in 1956 and along with others of her profession, subsequently achieved accreditation as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse in Manitoba. As a student and later as a young wife and mother, Alice was active in community affairs, excelling in field sports and figure skating. She participated in the establishment of a United Church Congregation in Crestview Park (then St. James-Assiniboia) where the family resided until 1975. Edmonton, Alberta, became the family's next home where Alice volunteered as an elementary school teacher's aide and later pursued a career as a driver training instructor, serving many foreign students with language barriers. With retirement in 1994, Jack and Alice repaired their summer residence at Shoal Lake, Ontario, which since has become their permanent home. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the medical, and all other staff at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital for the professional care and attention accorded our loved one during her extended period of treatment at that excellent facility. Funeral service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Saturday, December 1, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. Floral tributes are respectfully declined in favour of contribution to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7, or to a charity of your choosing. Arrangements entrusted to: Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 885-9715
