FERN BRAIDWOOD (published on December 04, 2007)

FERN BRAIDWOOD Fern Braidwood died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elliot Lake, Ontario on November 29, 2007, aged 73, after a long and couragous battle with breast cancer. Fern was born Flora Fern McLeod on November 19, 1934 in Dugald, Manitoba, to the late Robert and Mary McLeod (née Corrigal). She attended school in Dugald and worked in Winnipeg before moving to Calgary in the late 1950s. It was while living in Calgary that Fern met David Braidwood, the RCAF Flight Cadet (now Colonel, Ret.,) who would become her husband on April 12, 1958. As an Air Force wife, Fern moved with her family every two to three years, and set up homes in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, CFB Greenwood and Halifax. Fern was a talented Master Gardener and used her green thumb to great effect wherever she lived. After Fern and Dave retired to Elliot Lake in 1996, Fern enjoyed learning tai chi, playing golf, gardening, singing with the Cantata choir and hunting for bargains at yard and estate sales. Fern was known for her easy, infectious smile, and keen sense of the ridiculous. She was a strong alto who sang in choirs from an early age, but shunned the limelight (and the front row, if she could get away with it). Fern loved her family, and was quietly but fiercely protective of them. She loathed cucumber and liver. A talented craftswoman, she turned her hand variously to hooking rugs, crochet, knitting, furniture refinishing, and wreath making. She baked her bread from scratch, made jams and pickles and pies, and did it all with effortless style. Always athletic, Fern played championship softball as a girl, and was at various times an avid curler, golfer, line dancer, and walker. Fern is survived by her husband David, and children, Alison, Ian (Janice) and Alan (Renee). She also leaves her sisters, Eileen Quibell (Arnold), Mary Sellen (Dick), and brother Kenneth McLeod (Eileen). Fern's brothers, Roderick, Alick, Fraser and Glen McLeod predeceased her. A reception for family and friends will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 6 at the Elliot Lake Funeral Chapel Cremation Centre, 36 Ontario Avenue (705-848-9250). There will be no formal memorial service at Fern's request. The family would like to thank all the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital and the Palliative Care volunteers for their kindness to Fern during her last days. If you would like to make a donation in Fern's name, her preferred charity is the Northern Cancer Research Foundation, 41 Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury, ON, P3E 5J1 or online through
