WOLODYMYR (WALTER) KOSTIUK (published on February 23, 2008)

WOLODYMYR (WALTER) KOSTIUK May 3, 1921 - February 19, 2008 Walter passed away peacefully at the Concordia General Hospital surrounded by his devoted family on February 19, 2008. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Maria (Roman) Wasylkewycz, Luba (Steve) Pona, Oxana (Bohdan) Stupak, and Stephania (Kurt Weber). Left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren Natalie Pona (Richard), Adriana Pona (Talib), Renata Hernandez-Lopez (Cristian), Andrew and Michael Stupak, Nina and Daniel Weber, and great-granddaughter, Elena Hernandez-Lopez. Surviving him also is his niece, Irene Kuziw. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ivanka in 2000 and his sister, Theresa in 1997. Wlodzio was a real character. He had a wonderful sense of humour and could easily make people smile with his charming ways. He took a keen interest in Ukrainian politics, current events and sports - especially boxing and soccer. He managed M S Meat Market until his retirement at the age of 69, but always viewed it as his second home. A number of years ago, Tato suffered a debilitating stroke that left him with limited speech and movement. Despite this cramping of his style he still managed to carry on with dignity, using facial expressions and hand movements to communicate his needs. Ivanka, our mother, was the love of his life. She provided him with a home and family, and cared for him after his stroke. They had 49 nine years of happiness until her untimely passing. After our mother died, Tato went to live at Holy Family Personal Care Home. He continued to be actively involved in family events, most recently Ukrainian Christmas, which will remain joyfully in our hearts forever. He was a kind and caring father who showed concern for his children and grandchildren until his final moments. We will miss his gentle ways, his loving smile and his generosity. The family would like to thank the staff of Holy Family Personal Care Home for all their kindness towards our father and for helping him live his final years in comfort and dignity. A special thank you, as well, to Concordia General Hospital staff for providing support and care during this very trying time. Panakhyda is scheduled for Tuesday, February 26, at 7:00 p.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street. Dumka choir is to sing the responses. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by Fr. Isidore Dziadyk, OSBM, and Rev. Protodeacon Michael Woroby, on Wednesday, February 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. Interment to follow at All Saints Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. Donations in Walter's name may be made to Pomich Ukraini - Ukrainian Canadian Social Services, MB Branch, 235 McGregor Street, Winnipeg, MB R2W 4W5, or the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation. Vichnaya Pamiat.. We love you, Tatu.
