REV. JOHN M. SCHMIDT Rev. John M. Schmidt passed away peacefully on July 10 at age 90. Born April 6, 1918 in Russia he grew up on the family farm in Coaldale, Alberta. In 1945 he married Mary Nikkel of Aldergrove, BC and they worked for two years as missionaries on the First Nation Reserve in Little Grand Rapids, MB. From 1950-1963 John was director of The Gospel Light Hour radio agency (Mennonite Brethren Communications - today called Family Life Network). During the Second World War he served as a conscientious objector constructing roads around Jasper and welding at the Vancouver Shipyards. He pastored in many churches: Gospel Light Mission, Vineland ON, Winkler MB, Tofield AB, Waldheim SK, the Morrow Gospel Church, Westwood Community and Portage Avenue. Both he and his wife Mary eagerly helped those in need and generously shared with others. He remained always optimistic. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Olga, his children: Elly Dyck (Edgar), Linda Koop (Walt), Dorothy Siebert (Harold), Ed Schmidt, Shirley Schmidt (Wally), John Schmidt (Janice), Grace Penner (Marv) and Olga's children, Rose Prince (David), Marv Dueck (Kate) and Ron Dueck (Heidi), as well as 25 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also by a host of spiritual children. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Eastview Community Church, 3500 DeVries Avenue, following private interment in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Viewing Monday, July 14 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Donwood Manor Personal Care Home Chapel, 171 Donwood Drive. The family thanks the staff of Donwood Manor for their tender care of John over the past years.
