EDWARD SUCHY (published on July 15, 2008)

EDWARD SUCHY June 25, 1941 - July 11, 2008 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Ed Suchy announces his sudden passing in Gimli on Friday, July 11, 2008 at the age of 67 years. Ed is survived by his beloved wife Huguette of 41 years and he will be dearly missed by his children Ron (Jeannine) and Doreen (Kyle); grandchildren Cameron, Ryann, Bree and Nathan; his brothers Tony (Shirley), Dave and sister Rose-Marie (Colin) and numerous relatives and friends. He was predeceased in 1996 by his parents Pauline and Steve Suchy. Ed was born and raised in Gimli, Manitoba in a devout Ukrainian family. At the young age of 18 he began his painting career with his Uncle Stanley Gretchen. He later attended Red River Community College in Winnipeg and obtained his Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship in 1966. For over 42 years Ed mastered his trade. He worked on his own and with a number of local painting companies and contractors (Locken, Yaeger Brothers, etc.). Ed spent 10 of those years with the Department of National Defense 17th Wing before his semi-retirement in 1997...Ed never did officially retire from painting but gained a lot of strong friendships along the way. Dad always said he had a Ph.D: his was in painting. Steadie Eddie was the best painter around...all you had to do was ask and he'd tell you! Although Dad was passionate about painting he was most proud of his family and their accomplishments. He was always the happiest guy around when he spent countless hours attending his children and grandchildren's sporting events and helping in any way he could. He was truly a selfless person and put everybody's needs before his own. His legacy will live on in all of us. Ed was a great storyteller who could always fill a room with laughter. He cherished his weekends in Gimli with his brothers, socializing and gardening with Huguette. He was very proud of his Gimli roots and Ukrainian heritage and always looked forward to church events, dances and his Polka music hour every Saturday evening. Ed will always be remembered as a hard worker, devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and friend. We love you and you will be missed. Prayers will be said Wednesday evening July 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Korban Funeral Chapel, Winnipeg, 907 Main St. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 17 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, Gimli, Manitoba with Father Peter Chorney officiating. Interment will follow in the Gimli Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris Suchy, Brad Suchy, Gary Pinsonneault, Robert Bouchard, Danny Tkachyk and Dennis Jobin. Honourary Pallbearer Alec Panteluk. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of the Johnson Memorial Hospital, Gimli R.C.M.P and Paramedics. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ed may be made to the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, Gimli, Manitoba, ROC 1BO or to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada.
