HERBERT HENRY BARBER (published on August 23, 2008)

HERBERT HENRY BARBER After a courageous battle with cancer, Herbert Henry (Herb) Barber passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at Ottawa General Hospital. Born on March 8, 1922, Herb was the sixth of seven children born to Philip H. Barber and Dorothea (Dilk) who farmed near Lipton, Saskatchewan. He is survived by his loving sister, Lillian (the late Jack McKenzie), the eldest sibling, who is now 96. He was the beloved father of Linda (Peter Verney), his only child and daughter with his first wife, the late Shirley (Ezard) of Montreal. Remarried, he was also sadly predeceased by Norma (Stephens) of Calgary and, later, Alice (Byrne) of Winnipeg. Herb was and will continue to be treasured by generations of nieces, nephews and other relations whom he held dear across Canada and the US. After serving as a Flying Officer with the Royal Canadian Air Force, Herb made his career with Royal Trust. As Branch Manager for Kingston, Ontario, he was named to the city's Book of Honourable Achievement (1975) for his success in fundraising, helped refurbish City Hall, appeared in community theatre, and was recognized and invited with other community leaders to dine with her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. In his long career and retirement, he made many good friends who will miss him deeply. This year, despite poor health, Herb left many of these dear friends and neighbours on Vancouver Island and moved to Ottawa to be close to Linda. He lived happily and well at the Lord Lansdowne Residence on Bank Street, where he will be remembered with great fondness by staff and residents alike. Special thanks go to the staff of the thoracic unit at Ottawa General Hospital for their excellent care. No services will be held but donations in Herb's memory can be made to the local chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society. Expressions of condolence may be sent to www.mem.com.
