NORMA JANE GARBUTT (published on August 23, 2008)
NORMA JANE GARBUTT Peacefully on August 16, 2008 Norma Jane Garbutt passed away at the age of 78. Norma loved music. She met her husband Gord while members of the Kelvin Grads which later became the Musical Comedy Guild. Norma worked for Great West Life for eight years until 1953 when she retired to raise her family. Once all the children were all in school she joined the St. James- Assiniboia School Division at Westwood Collegiate where she remained for 20 years as an Administrative Assistant, a job which she loved. She was instrumental in the formation of the Manitoba Association of Non-Teaching Employees (M.A.N.T.E.) and was its first president and negotiations chairman. She took a keen interest in her family's sports activities. Many weekends were spent on the end of the pier at her beloved Victoria Beach watching her family in the sailing races. In her later years, the cottage at Gibson Drive was the gathering place for children and grandchildren, which gave her great joy. She loved little ones and had a special way with them. Norma and Gordon raised three children, Bruce, Robert and Jill in the Silver Heights area where they lived for 28 years. Upon retirement in 1989 she and Gordon sold their home and moved to a condo in River Heights. She grew up in Cresentwood so she felt she was returning to her roots. Norma and Gordon loved their cottage at Victoria Beach and spent much of their retirement years there, as well as going south to the Rio Grand Valley in Texas for three months every winter. Those who will cherish her memory are her loving husband Gordon; sons, Bruce (Tracey) and Rob (Beth); daughter Jill (Daryl); grandchildren, Eric, Ian, Johanna, Maegen, Andrew, Erin and Kristen; and her nieces, Shirley, Audrey and Laura. Norma will also be missed by many friends. We would like to thank the staff of the Poseidon Care Centre for their care and compassion towards Norma over the past year. Norma was predeceased by her parents James Norman and Catherine Robb and one sister Catherine. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson Society of Manitoba or a charity of your choice. In keeping Norma's request, cremation has already taken place. A celebration of Norma's life will take place on Monday, August 25 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, Winnipeg.
