MERCEDES JULIETTE CALLANDER (published on August 27, 2008)

MERCEDES JULIETTE CALLANDER Mercedes passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospital on August 20, 2008 at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her husband John Lewis in 1984. She is the cherished and loved mother of Joan (Murray Ainsworth), John (Brother Jeffrey, Congregation of the Alexian Brothers) and Mary Lois. Mom was the eldest of 15 children, eight of whom survived into adulthood. She will be sadly missed by her sisters Gisèle (the late Bert Hall), Hectorine (the late Frank Street), her brothers Omer LeVasseur (the late Madeline) (Bernice) and Paul LeVasseur (the late Sharon) (Genie Reyes); sister-in-law Lollie LeVasseur and brother-in-law Al Husband; her many nieces and nephews; and her many friends. She was predeceased by her brothers Louis and Farrell and her sister Ostende. Mom was devoted to her family and took great delight in her granddaughter Christine Ainsworth and her three great-grandchildren Abigail, Jack and Madeline. Mom was a valiant, faith-filled and liberal woman. Her Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was an Associate of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. Mom strove to be an example of God's love present in the world, to see the Christ in everyone with whom she came into contact. Her quest was to love more . Many who knew her called her an inspiration; some referred to her as their Spiritual or Faith Mother. Mom grew up in Lac du Bonnet. She was an excellent swimmer often swimming across the Winnipeg River which was at the backdoor of her family's home. As a young woman Mom loved to dance. Throughout her life she was an avid and good bridge player, enjoyed listening to classical music and reading good books. She trained as a teacher and one of her greatest joys was her time as a remedial reading teacher at St. John Brebeuf School. The family wishes to thank Dr. Bosco, the emergency staff at Victoria Hospital and the paramedics for their kindness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 30, at 10:00 a.m. in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place, with Rev. Msgr. Ward Jamieson, V.G., presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mercedes' memory to Brother Jeffrey Callander Philippines' Projects, Rossbrook House, or Sisters of the Holy Names Foreign Missions.
