DEREK RICHARD SLOBODA (published on August 27, 2008)

DEREK RICHARD SLOBODA April 10, 1986 - August 23, 2008 It is with profound sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved son and brother Derek Sloboda at the age of 22. Left to cherish his memory are his parents Richard and Valerie, his dear sister Kristin, paternal grandparents Joseph and Rose Sloboda, his maternal grandmother Lucille Hill, aunts Janice Polson, Joanne Mackenzie, Diane Sloboda and Margaret Bencharski. First cousins Christopher Manilla, Natalie Manilla, Stephanie Sloboda, Bradley Bollenbach, and Ryan Bollenbach. Derek was predeceased by his maternal grandfather Garry Hill. He will also be missed and fondly remembered by his extended family and his large circle of friends who knew him as D-Rok . Derek was born in Winnipeg on April 10, 1986. He spent his entire life in West Kildonan in the Riverbend area and had many fun times with the neighbourhood kids who all grew up together. He was an avid indoor and outdoor soccer player and grew up to be a fitness enthusiast. Derek graduated from West Kildonan Collegiate in 2004 and was entering his final year of Commerce at the University of Manitoba Asper School of Business this fall where he was on the Dean's Honor List. He took the 2007 winter semester off school to work and ski in Lake Louise, Alberta. He met people from all over the world and came back six months later with the mission of finishing his degree and then travelling to New Zealand for another adventure. While he attended high school and university he worked part time at Sobey's where he was known as a smart and courteous young man. The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Marilyn, the complete stranger, who took us in her boat to the beautiful place on the lake where Derek left us. We would also like to thank the officers of the Falcon Lake RCMP detachment who ensured our privacy and Derek's dignity were respected. He was the greatest son and brother to us and we will miss him always. A celebration of Derek's life will be held on Friday, August 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home. Viewing will take place at 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment to follow.
