MELVA JOAN MITCHELL (published on August 30, 2008)

MELVA JOAN MITCHELL With great sadness the family announces the passing of Melva Joan Mitchell on August 27, 2008 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by younger brothers, Bob (Faye) and Laurie of Brandon; her beloved baby sister Elizabeth of Bergland, ON; nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and other extended family and close friends. She was predeceased by her parents Dorothy and Mel Mitchell. Melva was born in Brandon on January 7, 1947 and received her early education there. She graduated from Neelin High School, then a teacher training program at Brandon College. Melva later completed a B.Ed. at U of M. She began her teaching career at Carberry, MB but soon moved to Winnipeg. After a brief stay in the city, Melva spent two years teaching in Edinburgh, Scotland and when she returned home, she settled into a long career in the Transcona-Springfield School Division, teaching various primary grades in several schools and touching the lives of hundreds of children who passed through her classroom. Ill health forced her to take a leave of absence some years before her official retirement in 2007. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of 3 West at Concordia Hospital for their many kindnesses at the start of Melva's final journey and the doctors and staff of GH3 at Health Sciences Centre for their compassionate support at the end of it. Donations can be made to the Melva Mitchell Memorial Fund at the Health Sciences Centre Foundation. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3 at St. George's Anglican Church, 321 Pandora Ave. West in Transcona, followed by a graveside service and interment at 4:00 p.m. at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Brandon.
