FRANK KOSTELNIAK (published on August 30, 2008)

FRANK KOSTELNIAK How sweet to sleep where all is peace, And pain is lulled to rest On Tuesday, August 26, 2008, Frank passed into eternal rest at Concordia Hospital due to complications after hip surgery. He was born and grew up in the Winnipeg Beach area, eventually meeting his soul mate and future wife Oresta (Doroschuk). They married in 1947 and settled on a farm in a place called Melnice, MB, where their oldest daughter Elaine was born. Trying to make a better living, he sought employment and got hired at the CNR Shops. They settled in Transcona where their daughter Lori was born. There were some lean times and layoffs, but he always managed to find work. He worked for Imperial Oil, Orange Crush and M.T.S. but always was recalled to CNR where he had 31 years of service, retiring in 1983. Frank's favourite time was during the CNR Shops holiday in July. He'd pack his young family and his favourite nephew Daryl and his mom, singing across the prairies heading for the Rockies and the West Coast. They crossed Canada from Vancouver Island to Prince Edward Island by car. He and Oresta travelled to Florida, Barbados, Hawaii and Europe, but best of all, he loved to go camping and fishing up north to Rocky Lake with his brother-in-law Dennis in their camper. He was an avid deer hunter until his first heart attack. After that, many health issues followed. He battled hard, surviving an abdominal aneurysm, prostate cancer, carotid surgery, a stroke and finally hip surgery. The loss of his daughter Lori, from lymphatic cancer on June 30th of this year, made him lose his will to fight. He was predeceased by his parents, Leon and Nora, his brother Ed. He is survived by his sister Jean Wilson, Toronto; brother Charles, Winnipeg, sister Anne Nitchie, Petersfield and sister-in-law Nettie, Winnipeg. Left to mourn his great loss is his wife Oresta of 61 years, daughter Elaine (Gordon) Smith, his son-in-law Stephen Blight, and the love of his life his grandsons, Paul (Elizabeth), Travis (Shawna) Kondratuk, Jordan and Jared Blight and great-grandson Spencer Kondratuk, many nieces and nephews, his in-laws the Doroschuk family, and especially his sister-in-law Margie Srutwa and Daryl and his family, who have always been there for him. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, Sept 1, 10:30 a.m. at Canad Inn, Club Regent, 1415 Regent Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations to Stroke Recovery Assoc. of Manitoba, Unit B, 247 Provencher Blvd. Wpg, MB R2H 0G6 would be greatly appreciated. So rest in peace dear Frank. Until we are together again. Love Oresta.
