VELMA FOSTER (published on September 13, 2008)

VELMA FOSTER (nee SUMNER) Peacefully and with her family by her side, Velma Jean Foster passed away September 1, 2008 at East View Lodge in Neepawa, Manitoba. Velma was the eldest daughter of George and Selina Sumner. She was born in Neepawa on June 7, 1935. Velma was raised on the family farm near Neepawa. She went to Normal School in Winnipeg to train as a teacher. She taught school in Harte, MB before moving to Flin Flon where she taught grades 1 and 2 for many years. She married Valmore (Val) Foster in 1957 and enjoyed 44 years of marriage before Val's death in 2001. Together they had three children, daughter Kim, born in 1960, two sons, Brett born in 1963, and Terry born in 1965. She had several passions in life. Family and home were very important to her. Velma had a passion for gardening and her gardens of flowers won awards and always attracted visitors. She enjoyed playing piano and accordion and loved to bake. After her husband passed away, Velma moved to Neepawa to be closer to her mother and brother. As her Parkinson's disease worsened she moved into East View Lodge in 2005. Velma adjusted to East View Lodge and made many friends with staff, residents and visitors. She was a lady who was always positive and cheerful. She will be missed by many. Velma was predeceased by her father George Sumner and husband Val. She is survived by her mother Selina, daughter Kim (Ron), sons Brett (Jackie) and Terry (Jenine), grandchildren Suzanne, Jenny, Nikki, Brandon and Joel, great-grandchildren Skyler, Kailen and Hayden, sister Shirley (Jim) Bateman, and brother Mervin (Janice) Sumner and many numerous nephews and nieces. As per her wishes, a graveside service was held on September 6 at the Neepawa Cemetery.
