ANDRE VITAL JEAN USUNIER (published on September 13, 2008)



ANDRE VITAL JEAN USUNIER The family wishes to announce the passing of André Vital Jean Usunier. André passed away peacefully in his residence at Fairview Personal Care Home, Brandon on Sunday, August 24, 2008 at the age of 93 years. He was born to Robert and Julia Usunier on February 20, 1915 on the family farm near Napinka, Manitoba. He attended school for a short period of time in Grande Clairiere where he lived with the Rey family. In December 1942, he joined the Canadian Armoured Corps and saw active service in The United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Holland before being discharged in 1946 after sustaining an injury. André married Cecile Careme on December 10, 1946 in Grande Clairiere, Manitoba. Shortly afterwards, they, along with André's parents, the Cancades, the Carbottes, and the Laberges moved to Brandon were André was employed with Cancade Brothers at the factory located directly behind the family home. In 1955, he began work with the Department of National Defence's Engineers of Canada at C.F.B. Shilo where he remained until his retirement in 1979. André enjoyed a long and happy retirement golfing, fishing and playing innumerable games of cards with family and friends. He also enjoyed trips to Minot, ND and nearby casinos. He is survived by Cecile, his wife of 61 years, son Paul (Elaine), son Francis, son Ray (Pat), daughter Judy Quadrelli (Tim) and daughter Elaine Gavigan (Dan). Also surviving are grandchildren, Marc (Kendra) and Alison Usunier, Michael, Matthew and Mark Usunier, Marcia Benway (Mark), Rayna Robinson (Nolan), Nicolette Quadrelli, and Tyler, Meghan and Andrea Gavigan; sisters, Edith, Marie and Susanne (Ken); brother Roland (Leona); sister-in-law Teresa; brothers-in-law Joe Careme (Stella), Ed Careme (Marie) and numerous nieces and nephews. André was predeceased by an infant daughter Judith; parents Robert and Julia; sisters Cecile and Yvonne; brothers Fernie and Vital (Butch) and daughter-in-law Gaye. Mass of Christian Burial took place on Thursday, August 28, 2008 at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Brandon with Fr. Dominic Yuen as Celebrant. Interment followed in the Veterans' Section of the Brandon Cemetery. Active Pallbearers were Tim Quadrelli, Denys Usunier, Joe Careme, Ron Careme, George Lampertz and Garth Wakefield. All in attendance were considered Honorary Pallbearers.
