TONIA HIRSCH (published on September 13, 2008)
TONIA HIRSCH It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Tonia Hirsch, at the Riverview Health Centre on September 3, 2008. Tonia was predeceased by her husband, Abraham (Max) Hirsch, in 1985 and their infant son, Henry in 1947. Tonia is survived by her five children and their spouses: Molly (Eric Elkin), Esther (Marvin Bernstein), Lillian (David Friedman), Shannon (Georgia Rumball), Jeff (Liz Murray) and grandchildren: Nina and Ben Elkin, Jonathan Bernstein, Abby and Alanna Friedman, Davis Hirsch, Max and Maya Hirsch. Also left to mourn her passing are her sister-in-law, Sabina Hirsch and family (Shelley, Monica and Len); her niece Claire Hoffer and family; cousin Issy Pfeffer and family; cousin Shelley Pfeffer and family; her aunt, Ruth Schindler and cousins David and Abby and their families. Tonia was born on November 4, 1923 in Poland to Hersh and Esther Schindler. Tragically, Tonia lost her parents and her brother, Naphtali, during the Holocaust. In 1949, Tonia, Max and Molly came to Canada and made their home in Winnipeg. Mom and Dad were grocers and owned and operated Hirsch Quality Store in St. James for many years. They worked very hard operating the store and raising five children. Toni was a selfless, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was always busy cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting and knitting. Toni was an avid reader and instilled the love of reading in all her children. Although she was modest, sweet and gentle she often surprised us with a wonderful sarcastic wit. Her children and grandchildren adored her. Funeral services were held September 5, 2008 at Etz Chayim Synagogue officiated by Rabbi L. Lander. Pallbearers were Eric Elkin, Marvin Bernstein, David Friedman, Len Hirsch, Jonathan Bernstein and Aaron Pfeffer. Honorary pallbearers were Issy Pfeffer and Ike Bernstein. Our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Riverview Health Centre, 3 West, for their compassionate care of our dear mother and grandmother. Donations may be made to Riverview Health Centre Foundation, 1 Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, R3L 2P4 or to a charity of your choice. |
