WALLACE MARTIN BJARNASON (published on September 13, 2008)

WALLACE MARTIN BJARNASON 1934 - 2008 While surrounded by his family Wally passed away peacefully in his 74th year on September 5, 2008, at Victoria Hospital after a yearlong battle with Myelodys Plastic Syndrome. Wally was born and raised in the west-end of Winnipeg. He was very active in sports especially football in his early age. Playing for Daniel Mac High School and the Weston Wildcats. Wally was employed with Air Canada for thirty-nine years. Wally ran several curling leagues and golf tournaments for Air Canada. He was also involved in outside golf and curling clubs and had won trophies in both sports. His greatest sport was hunting with his Labradors and close friends at the homestead in Riverton. We all cherish our thirty-eight years at the farm in Riverton every summer and fall. This was Wally's happiest times, sharing these times with his parents and watching his children and his grandchildren have fun. Wally and Joan did a lot of traveling over the years. Finally they settled in Texas and had spent eighteen winters at Sleepy Valley Resort. There they met great people who have become good friends. Wally also became a serious pool player and was the Domino King. In 2001, Wally and Joan moved out of Winnipeg and built a new home on the Links at the Lake Golf Course a mile north of Gimli. There the community grew and the neighbours have become their very special friends and golf buddies. A special thank you to Richard, Colin, Ken, and Al for all the crib games you played with Wally over the last year. He enjoyed taking your quarters! Wally loved his family deeply and was especially devoted to his dear wife Joan; in return his family cherishes the peerless example of his life, his depth of character and his unique sense of humour. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife and best friend Joan; his children Brant, (Cathy), Diane, (Mike), and son in-law Tom; his grandchildren Amanda, Stacey, Justin, and Lauren. He was predeceased by his father Wallace, Mother Margaret, sister Lorraine, and brother-in-law Charles. Our family thanks Dr. D. Houston, special thanks also to Nurse Barbara Hues at Cancer Care. Dr. Montodie, Dr. Gera, and all the staff at Johnson Memorial Hospital especially Connie, Brenda K. And a very special Thank you to Julie. We thank you for the support and care you all have given us this year. Special thanks also to staff in the ER and Debbie on 4th floor at the Victoria Hospital. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made in Wally's honour to Manitoba Cancer Care or the Johnson Memorial Hospital (Gimli), Palliative Care Centre. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, September 19, 2008, at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Your smile and spirit will be with us always. You are free now go gracefully in peace. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
