MARY STONE (published on September 20, 2008)

MARY STONE It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother - Mary Stone, who peacefully passed away on August 20, 2008, at the age of 85. Mary was predeceased by her husband Ben and grandson Michael. Mary left behind and will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Norman (Rachelle), Victor, Aaron and Leonard; along with grandchildren, Brian (Alda), Faith-Ann (Lorne) and Stephen; great-grandchildren, Aaron and Mica. Mom was raised in Rosvatow, Poland, into an extended family, which included aunts, uncles and cousins. Theirs was a close loving family. Together they confronted the hardships of the war and survived. When the war ended the family found themselves in a camp sponsored by the Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. It was there in the Berlin camp that our mother and father met and married. Twenty years ago marked another pivotal moment in our mother's life. She had received a liver transplant, which was uncommon for someone in their mid-sixties. Mom again survived the odds and moved forward with the business of living. Over the last seven or so years there were always full-time caregivers living at Mom's, first taking care of Dad and then of her. She'd always showed interest, concern and affection for the women that took care of her. Thank you - Mary Fay, Eden, Chit and Linda. Our Mom left us with wonderful memories and lessons well learned. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, doting grandmother and great-grandmother. Mom was a courageous woman. She led by example, modeling for us how to move forward in life in the face of much adversity. Funeral services were held on August 24, 2008 at Chesed Shel Emes with interment at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, officiated by Cantor Gerry Daien. Pallbearers were Brian Stone, Irv Karp, Lorne Kravetsky, Norm Mayer, Jessie Mayer and Seth Mayer. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba, the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or the charity of your choice.
