CHRISTINA SAUNDERS (published on September 20, 2008)

CHRISTINA SAUNDERS (nee HUMENY) September 24, 1921 - September 12, 2008 Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away at Burnaby General Hospital, Vancouver, BC. Mom was predeceased by her husband Fred of 67 years; parents Annie and Michael Humeny; and siblings Mary, Kay, Pauline, Steve and William. Left to cherish her memory are children Ken (Elsie) and Bette (Ted), grandchildren Kevin (Kim), Kirby, Kelly (Will), Dustin, Simone (Mike), great-grandchildren Karli, Kory, Hunter and Taylor, sisters-in-law Joanne Leclerc and Olga Humeny. Mom was born on a farm near Arborg and at a very early age moved to Winnipeg's North End . After attending King Edward School, she worked for a few years in the dry cleaning business. Mom and Dad married in 1936, and son Ken was born in 1939. Dad left for the War in 1940, returning in 1945. Those long five years were lonely for a young bride and mother, but Mom, along with thousands of women kept the home fires burning. Upon Dad's return they continued to live in Winnipeg, and 1952 brought them their absolute joy with the arrival of daughter, Bette. Dad's career then took the family to Brandon, Kelowna and finally Vancouver, where they finally resided. Mom was the ultimate homemaker and took much pride in doing so. Her home was always open to family and friends, and her grand-children always knew it as their home away from home. She was a kind and loving woman, quiet, gentle and with a heart of pure gold. Mom passed away in the same manner in which she lived - peacefully. We will always remember and love our dear Nan. She will be sadly missed. Cremation has taken place and a family memorial will be held Thanksgiving weekend, October 11, 2008 in Vancouver, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mom's memory may be made to the Children's Hospital Foundation or the Rainbow Society.
