KAROL JAN FILIMOWSKI (published on September 27, 2008)

KAROL JAN FILIMOWSKI With great sadness we announce Karol's peaceful passing on September 24, 2008 in the presence of his loving wife, at St. Boniface Hospital. He will be greatly missed by his family and close friends. Many thanks to the wonderful care given by the 5th floor staff during his final days. This heavily decorated veteran of the Second World War was born in Krakow and escaped from Poland in 1939. He joined the British Navy serving on destroyers and submarines in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Remaining in England after the war, Karol used that old Filimowski charm to sweep his beautiful ballroom dance partner off her feet. Finally marrying his beloved Cynthia in 1954, they settled in Manchester raising two children, Mark and Lisa. The family immigrated in 1967 to Winnipeg. During summer vacations the family explored Canada, appreciating the diversity of their new home. Karol loved camping and was at his happiest with a fishing rod in his hand chasing pickerel around the Winnipeg River. Karol always believed in getting involved, whether as the President of the Manitoba Barbers Association or as an active member of the Lions Club of Riverside. He greatly enjoyed the lasting friendships developed there. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you assist another member of our family who is battling liver disease and awaiting an organ transplant. Please forward donations in care of Mark Filimowski, 39 Edgewater Drive, Winnipeg, MB R2J 2V4 - we will ensure the money will be used to assist with costs not covered by healthcare. Talk to your family about organ donation.
