NANCY SIRETT (published on October 06, 2008)



NANCY SIRETT M.D. 1918 - 2008 Nancy Katharine Vaughan Sirett (nee Green) passed away peacefully on Friday, October 3, 2008 in her 90th year in the presence of her family. Predeceased by her father Harry A.V. Green Q.C.; mother Kate; brother Colin, and sister Sanchia. She is survived by her husband Morley; children Bill (Mary), Katharine (Tom), Janice, Susan, Duncan (Jo-Anne), Robin (Kathy) and Jennifer (Bruce); grandchildren, Chris (Erin), Carmen, Andrew ( Michelle), Carolyn, Paddy, Nikki, Nick, Colina and David. Nan was born on May 16, 1918 in Winnipeg, Manitoba where she attended Rupertsland School and the University of Manitoba. After graduating with a BSc. and MSc. in Bacteriology, she travelled to Jackson, Mississippi to undertake laboratory research in Parasitology. In 1940 she returned to Canada to enlist in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War. She attained the rank of Lieutenant and served in the Army Medical Corps in charge of the laboratory in the Army Medical Hospital in Ottawa. Following the end of the war she attended Medical School at the University of Manitoba where she met her husband Morley and graduated in 1952, one of three women in her class. Nan and Morley then moved to Erickson, Manitoba where they practiced medicine for 12 years. In 1966 they returned to Winnipeg where she ran the Aikins Street Clinic and pursued her interest in public health until her retirement. Nan was an active member of All Saints Church, University Women's Club, 20 Club, and Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Nan enjoyed many summers at the family cottage near Kenora, Ontario where she fished and canoed with her children and grandchildren. Her family thanks the medical and nursing staff in Emergency and Ward 3 South at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg for the wonderful care she received. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints Anglican Church Endowment Fund. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church, Broadway and Osborne, Winnipeg. Cremation will follow the service.
