MICHAEL JACOB ZAHARA (published on October 06, 2008)

MICHAEL JACOB ZAHARA 1914 - 2008 On Friday, October 3 with his family by his side, our father, grandfather and great-grandfather left us to join his beloved and dearly missed wife Mary. Dad was born on August 2, 1914 to Jacob and Maria Zahara (Kosowan) of Gardenton, Manitoba. He farmed first at the original homestead in the Gardenton area then later, after he and mom were married, built the homestead and farm just south of Tolstoi. Dad was a dedicated father who was known for his fun-loving and gregarious nature. How he loved to socialize! He was known to stop and chat incessantly with friends old and new, and he sure loved to tease the ladies. Those who knew dad no doubt experienced his hospitality and generosity on more than a few occasions. Dad enjoying sharing a drink with anyone who stopped by and children never left without cash in hand. Any neighbor who needed help got it. Dad also loved music and he loved to sing Ukrainian Christmas carols. He especially loved a rousing game of Hola and was so proud of his victories! After losing mom in 2004, life became a struggle for dad. How he missed her! In 2007 dad moved off the farm to Chalet Malouin in St. Malo, where he was lovingly cared for. Despite having family near, he spoke only of the day when he could join mom. Though the family grieves his loss, dad's wish has been granted and for this we are grateful. We thank those friends and family who took the time to visit dad at the Chalet, this meant so much to him. Mike was predeceased by his parents, his wife Mary in 2004; his sisters, Sophie, Pearl, Irene and Lillian; his brothers, John, Bill, Samuel and Manuel. He is survived by his only daughter Eva Goletski (Ed), sons Gord (Suzanne), Don (Brenda), Eddy and Allan; grandchildren, Cindy, Charlene (Dan), Ryan, Jason, Beverly (Chris), Aaron, Adrian, Aviree; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Hayley, Taylor, and Ashley; his sister Anne Graham, brother Nick Chalaturnyk and many nieces and nephews. Prayers will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, at 10:30 a.m. in Gardenton MB, with Rev. Fr. Miron Pozniak officiating. Interment to follow in the Ukrainian Historical Cemetery in Gardenton, MB. There will be a gathering of family and friends after each service. The family would like to extend a most heartfelt thanks to the staff at St. Pierre Hospital, whose loving-kindness and compassion to dad and the family will not be forgotten. Many thanks also to the staff at Chalet Malouin for their excellent care of dad. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Michael's Ukrainian Historical Church, Box 20, Gardenton, Manitoba, R0A 0M0.
