WILLIAM (BILL) RAY BURLAND (published on January 08, 2009)

WILLIAM (BILL) RAY BURLAND It is with extreme sadness that we announce that our beloved husband, brother, father and Granda, William (Bill) Ray Burland, passed away peacefully at the age of 68 years on January 2, 2009 following a brief battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents Ray and Greta, sister Jo, and dear friend Father Joe Suroviak. He will be remembered with love and great admiration by his beloved wife Sheila and his children Pat (Elaine), Doug, Siobhan (Chris), Shannon (Brock) and David. Owen, Jade, Gillian, Fiona and Erica will miss their Granda. Sisters Patricia (Mait) and Helen, and numerous nephews, nieces and extended family and friends will miss his ready wit and storehouse of knowledge, both trivial and profound. Bill was born in Winnipeg on August 22, 1940. He was a teacher in Winnipeg, Gilbert Plains and Roblin, Manitoba before moving with his family to Arcola, Saskatchewan in 1975. Although primarily an English teacher and librarian, Bill reveled in knowledge and learning and was an excellent teacher of a wide range of subjects including history, accounting, mathematics, and computer science. Following his retirement from teaching, Bill was able to devote more time to his passion for genealogy, tracing our family roots, discovering new family and friends along the way. He has spent the last ten years volunteering with the Manitoba Genealogical Society in many capacities. Throughout his life as a teacher and genealogist, he has found sanctuary at Victoria Beach, where he enjoyed doing puzzles, playing bridge, reading and basking in the sun, and spending time with his children and grand-children. A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Family Church, 778 Archibald Street. If friends so desire, donations in Bill's name may be made to the Manitoba Genealogical Society Inc., E1045 St James St., Winnipeg, MB, R3H 1B1. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald St. 253-5086
