JOHN ROSS VERNIE Peacefully, on January 8, 2009, John Ross Vernie passed away with his son and daughter by his side. He is survived by his loving children Brian (Barb) and Marilyn (Jim); grandchildren, Lyn (Juan), Melaine (Jason), Christa (Geoff), Anna-Marie (Sulaimon) and Billy (Kristy) as well as numerous great-grandchildren. John also leaves to mourn his twin brother Jim (Alice); sister Stephie Plexman; daughter-in-law Kathy Palmer (Darcy); and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. John was predeceased by his wife and soulmate Gladys and his son Larry. John was born in Selkirk on April 1, 1928 and lived his life there until his passing. He had worked at the Selkirk Rolling Mills and retired with 25 years of service. He then opened the family-ran bakery, Southview. After the sale of the Bakery, he continued his career as a baker with Gourmet Bakery until his final retirement in 1998. The Vernie family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Arborg Health Center and Dr. Shenouda for their kind, compassionate care of John. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 12 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk with The Ven. Godfrey Mawejje officiating. A viewing will be held one hour prior to service and cremation will follow. Private family interment of ashes will take place at a later date in the St. Clement's Cemetery.
