VIOLET ROBERTSON (published on January 10, 2009)

VIOLET ROBERTSON (nee BASSIL) Peacefully on January 1, 2009 with her family by her side Violet passed away at the age of 90 years. Mom will be so sadly missed. Left to cherish her memories are her daughters Ann, Irene, Joan (Ted), and son Allan (Marlaine); nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Violet was predeceased by her husband John, brother Reg, sisters Florence and Winnie, sons-in-law Jim and Gordon. Mom was born on September 9, 1918 in Russell MB. She grew up in the Rochdale area and as a young girl enjoyed horseback riding and skiing in the Assiniboine Valley. Mom went to Winnipeg to work for several years; she returned home and later on married John Robertson in July 1942. For many years they farmed in the Dropmore District of Manitoba where they raised their four children. In 1984 Mom and Dad retired to Russell but still made many visits back to the farm. After Dad passed away in 1987, Mom continued to live in Russell until 2000 when she moved to Stonewall, MB to be closer to her family, followed by the past two years at River East Personal Care in Winnipeg. Mom was involved in the Dropmore community and was always ready to help at the curling rink and Dropmore hall. She was a member of the United Church Ladies Club and fully enjoyed having the ladies for tea. Mom so looked forward to visits and trips with family and friends. She certainly enjoyed all the great times spent with her friend Edith Witty. Her grandchildren spent many vacations with her during the summer and she loved every minute. All of us couldn't wait to get home for some of Mom's home cooking and baking. She loved to knit and made many special gifts and afghans for each member of the family. Reading and playing cards were other favourite pastimes. All the family will dearly miss Mom's loving and caring ways. A memorial service was held in the Knox United Church, Russell MB, on January 6, 2009. A committal service followed at Russell Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers: Jamie Denorer, Aron Jenkins, Jared Masters, Brett Bauer, Darren Thiessen, Shawn Slatcher. A sincere thank-you to Braendle Bruce Funeral Services for care of the arrangements, Rev. David Howell for his thoughtful and caring service, and the United Church ladies for the great lunch. Our family would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the staff at River East Personal Care for the excellent care and comfort given to Mom during her stay. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knox United Church, Russell MB, or to a charity of your choice.
