ALICE SARAH MCIVOR (published on January 17, 2009)

ALICE SARAH MCIVOR (nee MCLEOD) March 3, 1952 January 14, 2009 It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Alice McIvor on January 14, 2009 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was predeceased by her husband Sydney McIvor. Alice leaves to cherish her memory, son William McIvor (Lou), daughter Tricia Peterson and her granddaughters, Emily Peterson and Phoenix McIvor, her brothers and sisters, Cynthia Beadle (Brian), Tom McLeod (Joanne), Albert (Buster) McLeod, Joe McLeod, and Cathy McLeod, nieces and nephews, Pamela Luce (John), Carlene Powers (Jason), Will Beadle (Sarah), Alecia McLeod (Trevor), Matthew McLeod, Albert A. McLeod (Deneka), Pernell McLeod-Bignell, Fairen Bignell-McLeod, great-nieces and nephews, Russell and DeVaughn Luce, Liam and Michaela Powers, Jessica McLeod, Elice McLeod and numerous cousins and extended family, and special friends, Jean Helstrom, Jeannie Telfer, Lyda and Paul Waroway, Faye Thorne, Ellen Smith, Noreen Kitsch, Sue Harper, Alice Bosiak and Cathy White. Alice was proud of her heritage as a fourth generation descendant of the Cree and Scottish families who led the HBC Fur Trade in northern Manitoba. She was born to William and Catherine McLeod in Norway House Manitoba, March 3, 1952. As a child she spoke Cree and lived in Baptizing Creek (50 miles down river from The Pas), Cormorant, and The Pas. For the past seven years Alice was employed with UPS Logistics in Winnipeg and formerly employed with Tolko Manitoba in The Pas. Alice was an avid reader and excelled in making bannock, beading, sewing textile art, knitting and collecting fine glass pieces and antiques. She donated her art and craft pieces to people in need. Alice especially loved spending time with her granddaughters, Emily and Phoenix. I dreamt of being a writer because of the many authors that have taken me to times and places I could not go. As the joys and pains of life unfolded around me, I would pore over the pages to catch an inkling of my story there. My companion books; piled high in every corner or on some distant shelf, waited patiently for me with their wry humour and secret wisdom. Yet, a greater wisdom prevails and today I will become that writer. I will write the story of my life weaving in the fantastic love I have for you, the pain and uncertainty that at times have laid me low, and the power of healing, peace and faith that could only come in time. My book too will be on some distant shelf, waiting to take you to times and places you thought you could not go. The family would like to thank the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services, Winnipeg Police Service and the emergency staff at the Grace Hospital. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Alice's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or a charity of your choice. Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hemauer Funeral Home Chapel in The Pas, MB. 204-623-3261 Interment will take place at Lakeside Cemetery. A memorial gathering in Winnipeg is being planned.
