RUTH SARAPU (published on January 17, 2009)

RUTH SARAPU (APSIT) After a difficult, yet courageous battle with cancer, Ruth Sarapu (Apsit) of Lac du Bonnet passed away on January 13, 2009 at the age of 74. Ruth is survived by her three children, Gerald, Larry (Kathy) and Peggy Yuill (Duncan); granddaughters, Leslie Sarapu, Lauren Yuill and Annika Yuill; and her brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Gale Apsit. She was predeceased by her mother Lucy in 1965, and father Peter in 1981. Mom lived her entire life in the Lac du Bonnet area. She told many happy stories of her years growing up on a farm in the Lettonia district, an area that was submerged by water following construction of the McArthur Falls dam site in 1953. With no electricity or running water, life on the farm was difficult for everyone, but rich with a sense of community. From there she moved to the Lee River district, and then during the 1960s, moved to her home on Apsit Road in the RM of Lac du Bonnet, where she lived until her death. With 31 years of being employed at the Lac du Bonnet Post Office, first as part-time clerk and working her way up to the position of Assistant Postmaster, mom knew most everyone in town by both name and box number. She truly enjoyed the opportunity her job provided every day to meet and chat with friends, old and new. After she retired at age 65, she missed the people but found new interests and activities to enjoy, including bowling, fishing outings with her son Larry, road trips with her daughter and son-in-law, and travelling in Europe. A highlight for her was a trip to Latvia in 2005, the birthplace of her parents. Two of mom's greatest joys were gardening and most of all, her three granddaughters she lovingly referred to as her little chickadees. Right up to the day she died, their presence and words brought a smile to her face. As a single parent, mom worked hard and made many sacrifices to provide a loving and stable home for her children and to help them succeed. Family was always her biggest priority. She never hesitated to help in any way she could. For this, we are eternally grateful. Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of her life on Tuesday, January 20 at 1:00 p.m. at the Lac du Bonnet Community Centre. Thank you to everyone who offered words of comfort and assistance over the past year. Special thanks to Cheryl, Laura, Sandy, and the rest of the homecare team in Oakbank for your compassion and help in making mom's last few months as comfortable as possible. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations in her honour may be made to the Lac du Bonnet District Charitable Foundation (P.O. Box 744, Lac du Bonnet, MB or www.lacdubonnetfoundation.ca). Arrangements by Wheeler Funeral Chapel. Phone 224-1525.
