RUBEN COHEN (published on January 17, 2009)
RUBEN COHEN January 25, 1925 - January 2, 2009 Peacefully on Friday January 2, 2009, at the Simkin Centre with his wife and daughter at his side - beloved husband of over 61 years to his childhood sweetheart Esther (Ettie, nee Wolovick), and loving father and father-in-law to Susan and Philip Kahanovitch, Neil Cohen, and Michael and Kes Cohen. Cherished Zaida to Josh Kahnovitch and Aaron Cohen. Treasured uncle of Janet (Red) Lautamus, Harriet (John) Einarson, and Marsha Cowan and her children Benji, Reese and Missy. Beloved uncle of Merle (Phil) Greene, David Manusow, Karen (David) Faber, Marilyn (Richard) Wolovick, Barry (Shelly) Wolovick, and David Wolovick, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Jennie and Morris Cohen, and his dear sisters Rose Nackimson and Eunice Golsof, brothers Harry Cohen, Max Cook and Ben Cowan, and beloved nephew Eddie Cowan. Ruben was also predeceased by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Jen and Ben Sommers and Fraedel and Meech Manusow. He is survived by brother-in-law and sister-in-law Morley and Sarah Wolovick. Ruben Cohen was a hero. Literally so through his wartime service as a paratrooper with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, but also in a more quiet way through his daily interactions with his family, friends, business associates -everybody he met. He was a mensch , well-known for his wit and humour, strong work ethic, sense of honour and his willingness to help others. He was active in the community as a Mason, Rotary Club member, hockey coach, Maple Leaf Curling Club Past-President and member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Ruben was very much a people person who always had a kind word or a ready joke (even though these were often corny) and was never too busy to lend a helping hand, or just to chat. The world is a better place for him having been here, and he shall be sorely missed. Thank you to all the wonderful caregivers who made Ruben's last three years possible - Sanu, Janet Ross, Angelina, Mercedes, Valerie and the caring staff of the Sharon Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruben Cohen's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Simkin Centre or charity of one's choice. |
