BERTIE WILLIAM SMITH (published on January 17, 2009)

BERTIE WILLIAM SMITH It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Bertie Smith, on Sunday, January 11, 2009, at the Charleswood Care Centre, at the age of 96 years. Remaining to forever cherish Bertie's memory are his wife Kay; son Tony (Lesley); daughter Babs (Jeff); stepdaughters, Bev and Marianne; his grandsons, Richard (Skye), Andy (Morgan), Mark (Jasmine), Neil (Charlotte) and Roy; his great-grandsons, Malik and Malcolm. He was predeceased by his first wife Ethel; sister Dorothy; both his parents and his stepsons, Tony, Mike and Murray. Dad (Bertie) will always be cherished and remembered by his family and many friends. It is time to celebrate Bertie's wonderful life not to mourn it. Enlisted with the London Irish Rifles from 1939 to 1945, Bertie was sent overseas when the Second World War broke out. He was very proud to be a Desert Rat and was decorated with medals and honours for his courageous and selfless efforts. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and lifetime member of the British Legion where he received their highest award the Gold Badge for all his volunteer work. Bertie's memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the ANAF #283, 3584 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Interment will take place at a later time in the spring. Our family would like to extend a big thank you to Cindy on Unit 4 plus all the staff of Charleswood Care Centre, as well as a heartfelt thanks to ANAF Vets #283 where Dad was a longtime member. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, a donation may be made to the Charleswood Care Centre, 5501 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3R 0G8 in memory of Bertie Smith. Your new life begins, your journey continues. We love you.
