WALTER CLAYTON MILLER (published on January 21, 2009)

WALTER CLAYTON MILLER Peacefully, on Saturday, January 17, 2009, husband of the late Audrey Janet, his beloved wife for 44 years of marriage, Walter died at the Golden West Centennial Lodge in Winnipeg, at the age of 92 years. Remaining to forever cherish Walter's memory are his loving sons, Ken (Cheryl); Bruce (Susan) and Wayne (Lori); three granddaughters, Kristin, Laura and Lindsay; five grandsons, Adam, Lee, Mark, Kirk and Derek, and among others, his cousin Margaret Graefer of Winkler. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Audrey in 1992 and by his close cousin, Billy Miller of Vernon in 2008. Dad was a proud and loyal man in his roles of husband, father, grandfather and employee of Eaton's, working there for 40 years where he loved serving Winnipeg's public as a butcher in the meat department. Walter also served on several boards of the United Church throughout Winnipeg and was a long standing member of the Masons, both in Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg. He enjoyed many vacations and cruises with his wife departing on these journeys with his usual resistance, yet always returning having had the time of his life. A Winnipeg Tribune article selected Walter as one of the 10 most interesting people in Winnipeg after the newspaper's correspondent interacted with him at Eaton's as a customer. In his younger years Dad loved playing hockey and baseball for his hometown team in Winkler. Watching hockey remained a passion throughout his life, never cheering for one particular team, preferring instead to hope for the best team to win . Having lived through the Depression, he truly believed himself to be living the life of a wealthy man. Walter had a wonderful gift of responding to the most complex issues and questions in life with clarity and simplicity. It was always comforting to hear Dad say, if you try your best, that's all you can do . A private family graveside service will take place at Glen Lawn Cemetery. Walter's funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 22 at 2:30 p.m., in the John Black Memorial United Church, 898 Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg with Rev. Jim Hatherly, presider. Our family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Golden West Centennial Lodge who cared for Dad with compassion during his years of residency and were instrumental in making Dad's passing a comfortable, dignified and noble event. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made in Dad's memory to the Golden West Centennial Lodge, 811 School Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba R2Y 0S8. Dad, we will miss you and will venture forward with your life as the foundation for our growth.
