ALEXANDER SOKOLIUK (published on January 27, 2009)
ALEXANDER SOKOLIUK His weary hours and days of worry His troubled nights are passed, And in our hearts we know He has found sweet rest at last. On January 24, 2009 as the sun was setting and with a tear in his eye, Alex took his last breath on this earth. Alexander O. Sokoliuk was born May 13, 1920 to Onufrey and Maria Sokoliuk in Sundown Manitoba. Alex was predeceased by his wife Mary; his parents; brothers John, Steve, Bill, Mike; sister Pauline; brothers-in-law Mike, Ben, Bill; and stepson John. He leaves to mourn his sisters Anne and Olga; sisters-in-law Cynthia, Ann and Pam; stepdaughter Verna; many nephews, nieces and his special friend Marie. Alex was a shy and quiet individual who had strong principles, lived by them, and respected people. One of his most enjoyed pastimes was playing cards and visiting with friends and family where he would retell stories of the days gone by and catch up with family events. Alex had a wonderful sense of humour and was quietly clever and witty. Alex loved to garden, go for rides in the countryside. Alex worked a variety of laboring jobs, but eventually was employed by CN rail where he worked until his retirement. In keeping with his upbringing, Alex had a deep-seated traditional faith in the Ukrainian Orthodox church and was a lifelong member of the All Saints Orthodox Church. Alex's family sincerely appreciates the care and kindness given to Alex by the staff on the 6th floor of Beacon Hill and the Dialysis unit at St. Boniface Hospital over the past three years. Donations can be made in Alex's memory to a charity of one's choice. Prayers will be held Wednesday, January 28 in the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St. at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at the All Saints Orthodox Church, 1500 Day Street at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2009 with Rt. Reverend Wm. Wasyliw officiating. Interment will follow in the Transcona Cemetery. Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements. Alex will always live on in our memories.
