SHIRLEY ANN BISHOP (published on January 28, 2009)
SHIRLEY ANN BISHOP (nee GARRITY) With great sadness we must announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Shirley Ann Bishop (nee Garrity) on January 18, 2009. With family by her side, Shirley peacefully left this world for a better place. Shirley was born on December 14, 1936 in Eriksdale, MB to Fredrick George and Beda Maria (Beatrice) (nee Sundberg) Garrity. Shirley was raised on a farm and this instilled in her a lifelong love for nature and wildlife. On the back of her trusty steed King The Wonder Horse she had many adventures exploring the Helendale area. Along with her love of horses Shirley also developed a great love for Western music. Learning to play the accordion she, along with her sister Vivian on the banjo, played many a dance where they were billed as The Garrity Girls . In the mid 1950s, Shirley met her champion Kenneth Edward Bishop and they were married on August 3, 1957 in St. Cuthbert's Church at Lily Bay. This union lasted over 51 years until Ken's passing on December 1, 2008. Shirley and Ken operated a mixed farm and raised their seven children. Shirley was at her happiest when she was behind the wheel and enjoyed going camping in the summers. She managed to go to California, Tennessee, Texas and Alaska in her travels and she also took a trip over to Great Britain. Besides working hard on the farm and caring for her children, Shirley managed to upgrade her education and worked for many years as a nurse, firstly in Winnipeg and then finally in the Lundar Personal Care Home until she retired. Shirley leaves to mourn her children; son Ken (Yvonne) and his daughter Sherri of Edmonton, AB; son Brad (Tena) and their children, Terry (Alicia) daughter Kristina, Chad (Sam) their son Tyler, Dustin, Dyllon and also their three foster children, Mark, Dakota and Lane; son Duane (Melinda) and their children, Sabrina, Garrit, Courtney and Ashton; daughter Kelly Pagee and her children, Connie, Lee and Charlotte (Tobi) with Madison and Serenity; daughter Sherry and her children, Shannon, Mitchel, Megan and Willie; daughter Diane and her children, Bryton and Casie with Hayden and Haylee; son Sean (Brindy) and their sons, Nathan and Connor. She also leaves to mourn Dick Garrity; her sisters-in-law, Irene Nordholt of Sundre, AB, Brenda (Arthur) Brown of Okotoks, AB, Wendy (Ed) Gerbrandt of Edmonton, AB, Debbie (Jim) Shields, Joanne Bishop and her brothers-in-law, Danny Bishop and Milo Fisher, all of Winnipeg, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her sister Vivian Sundberg; her sisters-in-law, Ellen (Ted) Boles of Burnaby, BC, Cindy Fisher; son-in-law Leo Pagee; brother-in-law Lloyd Nordholt; her in-laws, Fred and Thelma Bishop and her own parents. Shirley had a two year battle with cancer that she fought with an incredible amount of courage and strength. She will be greatly missed by her family but she will never be forgotten. The family would like to thank the staff of the E.M. Crowe Memorial Hospital, along with Dr. Burnet for the great care Shirley received. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Lundar Legion Hall with Pastor Winston McGillan officiating. Service will conclude at the hall and an interment of both Shirley and Ken's cremains will be held at a later date. Urn bearer will be her grandson Terry Bishop.
