VELMA GAGNON (nee CANN) It is with sadness the family announces the passing of Velma Lois Gagnon on Sunday, February 8, 2009, at Taché Centre at the age of 81 years. Velma was predeceased by her parents, Joseph Frederick and Sarah May Cann; her sister Irene; her brothers, Leslie, Bobby, Harold, Lorne and Ron; her son-in-law Gary; her step-daughter Marlene; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. She was also predeceased by her first husband Jack Hadden (1957) and her second husband Cecil Gagnon (1994). Mom will be lovingly remembered by her children: Leslie (Sandra) Hadden, Donna McCarthy, Gail (Darren) King, Cheryl (Claude) Marion; her grandchildren: Bradley, Pamela, Tiffany, Gabrielle, Ginette and Marc; her step-daughters, Jackie (Paul) Stang and Barbara Rolston and their children. Also left to mourn her passing are sisters: Beverley Ford, Shirley (Ron) Streib; sisters-in-law, Elsie, Emily and Virginia Cann; Eva Plantje, Leona Williams, Doreen Gagnon; brother-in-law Butch Gagnon and numerous nieces and nephews. Velma was born on April 28, 1927, in Winnipeg. Mom grew up in Elmwood and was educated at Lord Selkirk School. As a young woman she moved to Kamloops, BC. In Kamloops she met Jack Hadden and was married on February 25, 1950. Their children, Leslie and Donna were born in Kamloops. Mom also took care of Jack's three children, Jackie, Barbara and Marlene. Shortly after Jack's passing, Mom returned to Manitoba with the children. She met Cecil Gagnon in Winnipeg and they were married on May 29, 1959. Mom and Dad lived in St. Vital for a number of years where they raised their family. Mom enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and was employed at various jobs throughout her life including a number of years at Norwood Hardware. In their later years, Mom and Dad made frequent trips to BC. They retired to Victoria in 1988 and returned to Manitoba in 1993. Mom spent the last four years living at Taché Centre in St. Boniface. At Taché she enjoyed the home-cooked meals, socializing with staff and residents and visits from family members. She always enjoyed seeing her grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dr. Eng, the staff on 4ABC, Father Piché and Pastoral Care for their compassion and care. Mom, we will miss you. We love you and will treasure our memories of you. The Lord bless you, and keep you, may the Lord make His face shine upon you, and give you peace. Cremation has taken place and a funeral mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12 in St. Emile Parish, 556 St. Anne's Rd., with Father Lucien Roy, celebrant.
