IRENE WINNIFRED GUTTORMSON (published on February 12, 2009)
IRENE WINNIFRED GUTTORMSON After a lengthy illness, on Monday, February 9, 2009, at the Lundar Personal Care Home, Irene Winnifred Guttormson, aged 78 years, dearly loved daughter of the late John and Sigga Guttormson, passed peacefully from us. She was born January 2, 1931, in Lundar where she spent her childhood then graduated from the Provincial Normal School in Winnipeg and went on to her teaching career in Winnipeg. She completed her Arts and Music degrees and will be remembered by many as a dedicated and skilled teacher. Always fond of music, in her youth in Lundar she played in a group with her father for local dances, etc., and as a pianist at weddings. Irene also accompanied the Lundar Male Voice Choir conducted by her grandfather Vigfus Guttormson. After she retired, Irene moved back to Lundar, built a new home, and enjoyed being a part of the community again. Always proud of her Icelandic heritage she became very involved with the Lundar chapter of the Icelandic National League and served many years as Secretary. She was awarded an Honorary Lifetime membership. Irene was predeceased by her parents John Guttormson in September 1991; her mother Sigridur (Sigga) in June 1992; her brother Elman in October 2000 and a sister-in-law Hildur in May 1996, as well as many aunts and uncles. She leaves to mourn her brother, John (Joy) of Lundar and their children, Kimberley of Calgary, Jennifer of Winnipeg, Chris (Nicole) and children Kaitlyn and Ethan of Winnipeg, and Erin (Dennis) of Winnipeg; nieces and nephews, John (Nicola) and children, Emily and Hannah of Winnipeg, Lorraine (Steve) Cook and children, James, Kirsty and Matthew of Hong Kong, Barbara (Bob) Axworthy and daughter Jane of Winnipeg, Susan (Daryl) Probetts and children, Olivia and Renee of Denver, Colorado and Michael (Peggy) and sons, Kristian, Aidan, and Kieran of Winnipeg along with many cousins. The family would like to thank the staff of the Lundar Personal Care Home for their kindness, professionalism and love in caring for Irene. Thank you all. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the Lundar Lutheran Church with Pastor Ingthor Isfeld officiating. Service will conclude at the Church with a private family interment to be held at a later date.
