JOSEPH CHARLES FLOOD (published on February 14, 2009)

JOSEPH CHARLES FLOOD With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Joseph Charles Flood on Wednesday, February 11 at St. Boniface General Hospital, at the age of 85 years. His family was at his side. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Bernice (Bonny), daughters Sheryl Berglund, Catherine (Harold Chyczij) Debra (James Lam), Karen (Robert Bowden) and son Gordon. Joe was also adored by his six grandchildren: David Berglund, Greg, Katrina, Madeline and Caitlin Chyczij, and Holly Lam. Joe will also be sadly missed by his brothers Leo, Hubert and Don (Joan), sisters Patricia McKenzie and Mary Nairn, sisters-in-law, Mary Flood and Bonny Flood, cousin Jack Flood (Judy) and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his infant son Paul, brothers John, Harold, Morgan, Gillis (Fran), Al, Vincent (Alma) and parents Patrick and Catherine Flood. Joe was born in Forget, Saskatchewan when luxuries were unknown but close family ties were great. Though donning the air force uniform after grade l2, the war ended before he was called to serve. He then attended Athol Murray's unique college of Notre Dame in Wilcox, SK. He came to Manitoba, taught on permit for two years, attended teacher training college, taught in rural schools, finishing his arts degree in night classes later. He married Bernice McPhail in 1954 and then continued his teaching career, mainly as a principal in Junior High Schools in East Kildonan. He loved that career and the students and loved taking them on band trips. He was devoted to his family, his church and his schools, He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Independent Order of Foresters and earlier, the YMCA. For the past 20 years, he was a member of the Reh-Fit Centre and his beloved High Steppers Seniors Club. He enjoyed over 40 summers at the cottage at Pelican Lake where Bernice's family became his too, and they had many friends. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 14 at 11:00 a.m. with viewing half hour prior, in St. Ignatius Church (Stafford at Corydon), Fr. Gerry McDougall officiating with a reception to follow. Pallbearers are Joe's nephews. Interment will follow at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff of the St. Boniface Hospital and Misericordia Cedar Grove for their care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 800-6 Donald St., or your favorite charity. Life is eternal and love is immortal and death is only a horizon and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight. (W.R. Raymond) Chapel Lawn 885 - 9715
