IRENE (JUDY) FLORENCE MCGILVRAY Irene (Judy) Florence McGilvray passed away peacefully at her home in the Flin Flon Personal Care Home in Flin Flon, Manitoba the morning of January 29, 2009. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, her parents, two sisters and five brothers. At the time of her death she was 104 years and four months old. She is survived by her daughter and son as well as three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Irene (Judy) was born September 16, 1904 to parents Jim and Margaret Judd in North High Bluff, Manitoba. After completing her schooling there she travelled to Winnipeg to enter the nursing program at the Children's Hospital from where she graduated in 1926 receiving the General Proficiency Award. She spent time in a variety of hospitals in Saskatchewan and Northern Ontario before heading to Northern Manitoba in the spring of 1929 she was the first nurse in the hospital in the new Mining Centre of Flin Flon. Soon after arriving in Flin Flon she met a young man working in the HBM S's office D.B. Mac McGilvray. They were married November 15, 1930 in St. Norbert, Manitoba at her parent's home. Daughter Margaret was born the following year in October and son William (Bill) came along following the strike in July, 1934. Judy returned to her chosen career during the Second World War when there was a shortage of nursing help in Flin Flon she worked as a Special nurse until Mac retired in 1966. They moved to Winnipeg in 1973 where they enjoyed many happy years in their Grant Avenue Apartment with old friends from Flin Flon as well as new ones met through membership at Oxford United Church. Mac passed away in 1981 and Judy remained in the apartment in Winnipeg until she returned to Flin Flon to live in the Personal Care Home at the end of October 2006. Irene (Judy) is survived by her daughter Margaret (Murray) Smith of Flin Flon; son Bill (Marilyn) of London, Ontario as well as three grandchildren Karen (Don), David (Louise) and Andrea and four great-grandchildren Lucas Williams, Emily and Eric McGilvray and Sabrine Saleh all of Toronto. There are also three sisters-in-law Eileen Judd in Kelowna, Margaret Judd in Calgary and Jan McGilvray also in Calgary as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Irene (Judy) McGilvray were held on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. from the Flin Flon Personal Care Home, 50 Church Street in Flin Flon, Manitoba with Rev. Greg Parker Officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Irene's Memory to Winnipeg Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba (CE501, 840 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, R3A 1S1), Flin Flon Personal Care Home care of Business Office, P.O. Box 340, Flin Flon, MB R8A 1N2 or to the charity of one's choice. Dadson Funeral Home Crematorium in Flin Flon, Manitoba was entrusted with the arrangements. 204-687-5821.
