DOBRODIJKA OLJA (OLIA) FIL' (published on March 05, 2009)

DOBRODIJKA OLJA (OLIA) FIL' (nee KRYSIUK) It is with deep sorrow that we inform friends of the passing of Olja on Friday, February 27, 2009 at the age of 74 years less two months at the Redwater Health Care Centre. Olja is survived by her husband, Father Hryhorij Fil'; and niece, Lydia (Gene) Emanuel. Olja was born in Montreal on April 13, 1935 to Roman and Barbara Krysiuk (nee Browchuk). In 1963 she came to St. Andrew's College in Winnipeg, where she met Hryhorij Fil'. They were married on June 5, 1965 in Montreal. In 1969, they moved to Montreal, where Father studied at McGill, while Olja worked at a hospital as a secretary supporting her husband. Upon passing his final Ph.D. examination, Father was assigned to UGO Parish in Radway. Due to unforeseen circumstances, they had to move from Radway to Edmonton, where Father Hryhorij enrolled at the University of Alberta and completed his Bachelor of Education. Olja supported him until he got a job as the writer and developer of Ukrainian Books for Ukrainian Bilingual classes. From Edmonton they moved to Smoky Lake, where Hryhorij started to teach. This is the only time that Olja was able to take it easy. In 1981 Hryhorij and Olia bought the Grocery Store in Radway where she operated it until she had her third heart attack (April 1, 2007) from which she did not recover. Olja was active in many organizations, like Sojuz Ukrainok Kanady and others, served on the board of directors of the Radway Library. Her friendly disposition towards people and the clientele made the Fil's Shop and Save Store a gathering place six days a week. Funeral Rite will take place Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 820 Burrows Avenue, Winnipeg, MB. Burial will follow in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. To send condolences, visit www.parkmemorial.com Park Memorial Edmonton 1-800-822-3526 Vichnaya Pamyat KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
