LOUISE SMID (published on March 24, 2009)

LOUISE SMID February 17, 1950 - March 21, 2009 On March 21, 2009, Louise Smid lost her courageous battle to cancer and paraneoplastic syndrome. She will be forever missed by John, her husband of 36 years; children, Borden (Gwen) Smid and Leanne (Brian) Ulrich, and her precious grandchildren, Emily, Samantha and Luke Ulrich. The family would like to thank those that supported us and visited Louise during her illness. Louise was born in Montreal on February 17, 1950. Her family moved to Winnipeg, she grew up in Charleswood, and John and Louise raised their family in East Selkirk and Winnipeg. She was enjoying her retirement in the Whiteshell. Louise built a life that focused on her family. Whether it was cooking, camping every moment possible in the summer or travelling south in the winter, she loved the fact that she was with family. Louise always made time to talk no matter how rushed she was. She wasn't just Nana to her grandchildren, she was a second mom. During the last 15 months of her life, Louise found strength to fight her illness by giving herself to others, and even in her final days, she still worried about her family and how they would manage. She confidently faced death without fear, and this was a witness of God's grace to many. Louise will be missed for her infectious laughter and willingness to be silly. There are too many experiences that we still crave, but we're blessed by the memories we have. The family would like to thank Dr. Krepart and the caring staff of the Women's Hospital. Louise was predeceased by her parents Borden and Jeanette Biggar. She is survived by her sisters, Susan (Kevin) Siemens and Lynn (Alden) Vandale along with their children. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Manitoba Pioneer Camp or Compassion Canada. Interment will be at Sunnyside Cemetery (off Garvin Road) at 9:30 a.m. and memorial service to follow at St. Aidan's Anglican Church (274 Campbell) on Saturday, March 28, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. For online condolences or to light a memorial candle please log onto www.mosaicfunerals.ca.
