LILY ELSTON (published on April 18, 2009)

LILY ELSTON Lily Elston died peacefully, 1:00 a.m. April 17, 2009 at the Sharon Home. Lily Goldberg Jacobson Elston was born to Chana Faigeh and Morris Goldberg on January 19, 1919 in Yadlinsk, Poland. Lily came to Canada by ship in 1928 through Halifax. She came with her father Morris Goldberg, and her brother Sam. Her mother, Chana Faigeh came with four children, three years later. Eldest of eight, Lily grew up in the North End, helping her father to run the Goldberg Grocery Store, a well known hub of activity on Selkirk and Powers. She was the mainstay of her family, since her mother became disabled when Lily was 14 years old. Her family was a center point in her life. Her siblings are Sam (d); Betty Kleinmintz (d) (Toronto); Max (d); Charlie (Toronto); Yetta Cohen (Toronto); Izzy Gaynor (d) (Vancouver) and Hilda Gotfried. Lily went to Aberdeen School, but left early on to work in a sewing factory. She was always proud of her ability to be as productive as the experienced workers around her. Lily married Alec Jacobson in 1938 and when he went east to Debert, NS to train in the army, she followed and remained in the east briefly to stay near. Lily worked in retail all her life from Oretzski's on Selkirk, to Dayton's on Portage and finally as manager of the May Company in Polo Park for many years. She and Alec had two daughters: Faye (Jacobson) Mount, husband Ken, and Mindy Marlene (d. 1968). Lily married Lou Elston, her late love, in 1990. Her granddaughters Jocelyn and Sarah Mount brought much enjoyment to her life. She loved traveling and cruising and made friends everywhere she went. She loved to celebrate in style. Lily and Lou had a great time together! Thanks to all the staff at the Sharon Home, Weinberg 1, and the family who have been so supportive. Funeral will be at Temple Shalom, 1077 Grant Ave., Sunday April 19, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Honourary pallbearers are Isaac Gotfried, Gary Shapira and Ken Mount. Pallbearers are Frank Goldberg, Laurie Goldberg, Jared Shapira, Brian Novak, Elliot Saunders, Rick Wolfson, and Phil Spivak. Donations in Lily's name can be made to Shalom Residences 582-7064 or Temple Shalom 453-1625.
