VERNA BENNINGTON (published on April 18, 2009)
VERNA BENNINGTON 1927 - 2009 Florence Verna Bennington of Calgary passed away Monday, April 13, 2009 at the age of 82 years. Verna was a remarkable woman whose life was both challenging and fulfilling. Verna joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a young woman. During this time she met and married the love of her life, Ed Bennington, in 1946. Verna was a stay at home mom, raising six children over twenty-eight years until Ed's death in 1974. Verna became a partner in a local business in Brooks that developed into a great success. She married her good companion, Arthur Johnson in 1982 and they shared 16 years together until Art's passing in 1998. People knew Verna to be a kind, caring and thoughtful person. Verna had a passion for music and had favorite songs from every decade. She loved the outdoors and had great times fishing and camping with friends and family in Brooks. Verna became an accomplished gardener who always had beautiful begonias, gladiolas and roses. She was a great fan of Calgary's sports teams, Flames and Stampeders. The most important part of Verna's life was her family. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her children, Ed (Ruth) Bennington of Victoria, BC, Joanne (Albert) Dovichak of Tilley, AB, Rob (Cathy) Bennington of High River, AB, Ron (Donna) Bennington of Calgary, AB, Barry (Karen) Bennington of Wellington, New Zealand and Leah (Adam) Nega of Calgary, AB. Granny B is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher (Carolyn) Bennington, Andrea and Michael Bennington, Heather (JJ) Hollinda, Deanne (Kevin) Suhai, Andy (Kilee) Dovichak, Tony (Kristy) Dovichak, David, James and Allison Bennington, Teegan and Thomas Bennington, Sam, Stephanie and Nathaniel Bennington, Ben and Megan Nega and great-grandchildren, Kara, Laura and Brooke Hollinda, Jack, Maxx and Andie Suhai, Drew, Aleksandra and Matthew Dovichak and Zackery, Brady, Jayel and Kamryn Dovichak. Verna was predeceased by her first husband Ed Bennington in 1974, two infant daughters, great-grandson Tyler Hollinda in 1996 and her second husband Arthur Johnson in 1998. A Memorial Service will be held at SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE, 12700 Macleod Trail South, Calgary on Friday, May 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the charity of their choice.
