KURT LEBTAG (published on April 29, 2009)

KURT LEBTAG December 29, 1924 - April 26, 2009 With his beloved wife at his side and surrounded by his family, Kurt Lebtag surrendered his earthly body and was raised up into the loving arms of God. We mourn his passing, yet take great comfort in the peace and grace that Kurt displayed, strong in his faith that a place had been prepared for him in the Heavenly Kingdom. Kurt was born on December 29, 1924 in the village of Kristianowka, Ukraine. Life growing up was very difficult and dangerous. As a result of Kurt ventured forth in 1941 and found his way to Germany by war's end. While still there, Kurt was finally free to openly declare his faith and was baptized by Rev. Winter of the Mennonite church. In 1948 Kurt came to Canada which he considered one of his greatest fortunes. Canada provided new opportunities for a far better life than he ever imagined. In 1950 he married Katie Schroeder and together they raised four children. Katie passed away in 1996 after almost 46 years of marriage. Kurt loved building things. It seemed natural when he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law John Schroeder and their wives, hence Schroeder-Lebtag Construction Co. It made us proud of dad to know they built high quality homes with a high level of integrity. Long arduous workdays never stopped Kurt from pursuing his numerous pastimes and hobbies. Hunting, fishing, stamp collecting, and raising fancy pigeons kept him busy....at least until grandchildren began to arrive. Kurt's calendar then became filled with unannounced visits bearing treats that always seemed to emerge mysteriously from behind the seat of his trusty pickup truck. Since he was at our homes anyway he figured he might as well improve them to his standards. We are all the beneficiaries of his craftsmanship. Kurt was blessed when he met and married Mary Bergen (nee Penner) in 1998. The two of them shared a great love throughout their 10 years of marriage and enjoyed many happy experiences. Kurt was predeceased by his parents, first wife Katie, brother-in-law John Schroeder, sister-in-law Helen Haucke, brother-in-law Franz Veith and son-in-law Ben Epp. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Mary; children Hilda (Jim) Brown; Ingrid Johnson; Ali Epp (Doug Budyk); John (Georgia) Lebtag; grandchildren Robyn (Edward) Salguero; James Brown; Geoffrey, Karyn, Andrew, Krista and Adam Johnson; Angela Epp; and Andrea, Mark and Dieter Lebtag; great-grandchildren Nicholas and Eric Salguero; sister Gerda Veith and brother Max (Elizabeth) Lebtag; sister-in-law Katie Schroeder; Mary's children Irmgard Contant and sons David and Nick; Ed (Norma) Bergen and sons Adam and Scott; Ron (Debbie) Bergen and children Blake and Justina; and extended families and many friends. Kurt specifically asked that we extend special thanks to Dr. Harris and her wonderful staff namely Val, Carol, Cathy, Catherine, Nancy, Paula and Mary as well as to Dr. Doermer. Your warmth and compassion were greatly appreciated. Thanks also to the Palliative Care Team for all they did to make it possible for Kurt to stay at home. Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 1 at 1:00 p.m. at the North Kildonan Mennonite Church, 1131 Roch St., Winnipeg. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main Street. During his illness Kurt received numerous blood transfusions. Please consider giving the gift of life.
