THELMA JEAN SMOLINSKI (JOHNSON, nee VARNES) June 15, 1923 - April 29, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our Mom, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Sister, Thelma Smolinski, on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the age of 85. Mom is survived by her children Jim Johnson (Marlys), Mary Hydomako (John), Audrey Gmitrowski (Tony), Ruth Neskar and Kathy Smolinski (Gayard Fuerst); grandchildren David (Dawn), Shelley (Jim), Wendy (Allan), April (Tom), Jay, Christine (Steve), Bonnie (Sonny), Mark, Tanya (Jarod), Heather, Tara (Greg), Brayden and Kelby; great-grandchildren Matthew, Jacob, Landon, Kwyn, Taylor, Ryan, Alix, Christopher and Maelyn. Mom is also survived by her brothers Ronald Varnes (Eileen), Gerald Varnes (Irene) and Crawford Varnes; sisters-in-law Lorraine Varnes and Toots Smoler, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her husband Stanley, parents Harry and Maude Varnes, brothers Arthur and Allan, sisters Audrey and Mary, sisters-in-law Doreen and Irene and grandson Kyle Johnson. Mom was born in Winnipeg on June 15, 1923. She was raised at 709 Elgin Avenue, until she married Norman Johnson and later moved with her four children to Tyndall, MB in 1950. In 1964, she married Stanley Smolinski and raised their daughter Kathy and farmed until moving to Beausejour in 2002. Mom enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards, baking and canning, travelling and was a loyal fan of all sports. In her later years, mom attended the Adult Day Program at East Gate Lodge and always came home with a great story to tell. Mom was hard working, loving, caring, with a wonderful sense of humour. A more generous person you'll never find. Thank you Mom for always being there. We love you dearly and are going to miss you with all our hearts. The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Schmidt, for the dignity, respect, kindness and care given to our Mom. It will never be forgotten. Also, thanks to the staff at the Beausejour Hospital for their compassion and care. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, Beausejour, MB. Interment to follow at the Sandhill Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., also at the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, if family and friends so desire, donations in Thelma's memory, may be made to the Adult Day Program , in care of East Gate Lodge, Box 1690, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0, or to a charity of one's choice.
