WINNIFRID (WINNIE) ANDERSON (published on May 02, 2009)

WINNIFRID (WINNIE) ANDERSON September 29, 1919 - April 28, 2009 Winnifrid (Winnie) passed away peacefully on Tuesday April 28, 2009 at the Riverview Health Center. She was predeceased by her husband John Alexander Anderson to whom she was married for 56 years, her parents Harold and Mary Alice Lees, and her brother Norman Lees. She is survived by, and will be lovingly remembered, by her daughter Linda Ash (husband David and grandson Taylor), daughter Elaine Anderson (grandson Ryan Reeve and wife Leslie), son Lorne Anderson (wife Carol and granddaughters Alexandra and Micaela) and sister Marj Procter (husband George). Winnifrid was born in Winnipeg on September 29, 1919 and attended Luxton and St. John's High School. After graduation she was employed at the T. Eaton Co. for 26 years where she met John and married on June 25, 1949. She was a member of St. John's United Church in Winnipeg, was a devoted mother and deeply loved her children and grandchildren. She loved to knit and sew for all of her family and was a wonderful cook. When they retired they moved to Gimli, Manitoba where they lived for 21 years. She belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of Branch #182 Gimli Legion and the Gimli Art Club. They loved to travel and spent many winters in the USA and traveled to Langley and White Rock, BC where they visited family and friends. A highlight was a trip to London, England to visit relatives and tour Scotland, the place of John's heritage. She was fond of the poem My Guardian Angel - Dear Angel ever at my side, how lovely you must be. To leave your home in heaven, to guard a child like me. When I'm far away from home, or may be hard at play, I know you will protect me, from harm along the way. Your beautiful and shining face, I see not, though you are near. The sweetness of your lovely voice, I cannot really hear. When I pray, you're praying too, your prayer is just for me. But, when I sleep, you never do, you're watching over me. In 1996 Winnifrid and John moved from Gimli to Winnipeg where they were able to spend more time with family. In 2006 Winnifrid moved to the St. Norbert Personal Care Home. The family appreciated the care she received there prior to her recent move to the Riverview Health Centre. The family is grateful to the staff at Riverview CD1 wing who made it feel like home for Winnifrid, who was fondly referred to as Queen Elizabeth . A service for family and family friends will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation. Chapel Lawn 885 - 9715
