GORDON BOURNS (published on May 02, 2009)
GORDON BOURNS Mercifully, after a brief struggle with the complications of a stroke, Gordon Bourns, aged 85, passed away on April 28, 2009 in Killarney, Manitoba. Gordon was predeceased by his wife Roma (Girard), his parents Robert and Violet (Taylor), and his brothers, Hugh, Jim, and Howard. He leaves to mourn numerous nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of friends. Gordon was born on the home farm at Cartwright, MB on September 26, 1923. He attended Chesterville School and remained on the farm until 1942 when he enlisted in the Air Force. After training as a mechanic, he was stationed at Skipton on Swale with the 433 Squadron where he served as an engine mechanic until discharge in 1946. He returned home briefly before starting a 30 year career as a heavy duty mechanic at IHC in Winnipeg. It was in Winnipeg that he found his Cinderella in Roma Girard whom he married in 1952. Though never having children of their own, they were blessed by and enjoyed the company of many friends and family, always making sure to spoil their nieces and nephews. Hunting trips and playing pool were favourite pastimes for Gordon. Throughout his life he maintained a special relationship with his brother Hugh and the farm he was raised on. Within weeks of his retirement he and Roma moved to Pilot Mound, MB where they spent seven years until purchasing their final home in Killarney, MB in 1987. Gordon spent much of his time in the company of his brother helping out on the farm and putting his mechanical skills to use on Hugh's machinery. Gordon was a dedicated husband to Roma taking care of her throughout her battle with Alzheimer's, until her death in 1993. He lived alone after her passing but he did not live a lonely life. He will be missed by his family and by many people in the Killarney area. At Gordon's request a private graveside service was held on May 2, 2009 at the Cartwright cemetery. Gifts of remembrance may be directed to the Cartwright and Area Foundation in his name. Peace be with you. www.wheatlnd.com |
